Puppetry Across the Curriculum

Monday, July 28, 2008

Most of us were expecting the usual hand puppets (the one using all socks, cloth materials) at the first place. And it turned out to be a Shadow Puppetry (just like wayang kulit) which was quite interesting as well.

About 20+ teachers from different schools of Brunei I & Brunei III attended the 1st group of this workshop. Mrs Karen Conneth, Invited Speaker from US gave her briefing before we moved on to our practical activity. It was quite exciting doing the puppet characters, the development of the story, the sound effect etc. Mind you, teachers were divided into small groups. So, each teachers actively engaged in the whole process of the activity.

By the way, our group were given History as the theme and we chose Sultan Bolkiah & Puteri Lela Menchanai as our story. You can see our male & female puppets in the picture above. :)

'Shadow puppetry is a great tool for teaching stories, myths and legends from cultures and religions all over the world. You can also use it as a storytelling tool for stories that children write by themselves or as a group. Whether you use it as just a class project, or end up with a performance at your school or congregation, it is great fun for everybody involved'
