Teachers = Upgraded & Updated

“The teaching profession in Brunei is at a crossroads that will test the ability of teachers to deliver a new education system for the 21st Century, whereby they must adapt to a rapidly changing environment and the needs of a wide-ranging clientele.

"Many teachers are increasingly active in shaping and defining their own professionalism but this practice needs to be expanded to cover the entire teaching profession. Furthermore, teachers must be encouraged and empowered to shape their own sense of professionalism." The Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohd Taib, made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the 1st Teachers' Conference held in conjunction with the le Teachers' Day Anniversary which is themed "Enhancing Teachers Professionalism Towards the National Education System for the 21st Century".

The minister said there is an urgent need to reconnect teachers with their changing professionalism and to show how it increasingly has impact on their everyday habits, relationships and values and from there, teachers can build new professional structures and support but they need a significant boost from school leaders and others to ensure that teaching is one of the top professions in this country.

The recent national focus on content and pedagogic issues need to focus on not only on improving performance but also instilling in teachers an understanding of the new professionalism needed for this century and our school leaders have a critical role that is to secure teachers' appreciation of the needs to address these areas, thus, they have a vital role to play if they are to be addressed successfully, said the minister.
