Teachers from six schools today had their first teaching forum and the topic that they were focussing were 'Teaching word problems (addition) to Year 1 students'. At the beginning of the session all teachers from the six schools, namely SR Pusar Ulak, Sr Raja Isteri Fatimah, SR Datu Ahmad, SR Hj Tarif, SR PAP Besar and SR Pehin Datu Jamil, shared their strategies on how to teach the word problems.
A lot of interesting ideas came up such as Using the pictures, Using ICT, Using concrete materials (hands-on activity), singing a song and for the year 1 students a lot of body gestures need to be used to emphasize the mathematics terminology used. Discussion followed after the sharing session and teachers were keen to have this kind of 'meeting' to share ideas/strategies from the other teachers who have the common issues as they are.
Anyway, well done to Cikgu Mariya, Suriani and Siti Nurdiana for their effort to present their strategies on teaching word problems...(yeahh.... :))
